Chronicle of the Skiklub Bochum eV

After the First World War, a few people who were enthusiastic about skiing came together in Bochum and founded the ski club under the direction of Walter Breitenbach in 1919 in order to pursue their passion in a community. They met regularly at the Hotel Kaiserhof and organized the upcoming ski trips to Winterberg at the weekend. On Saturdays, people set off in the direction of Winterberg to pursue skiing - mainly cross-country skiing. In 1924 the first chairman Walter Breitenbach pursued the idea of his own hut in Winterberg and was able to put it into practice after a short time in 1928: the hut in Winterberg, Hauptstrasse 24. In addition to his work in the SKB, Walter Breitenbach was able to develop skiing From 1925 onwards he helped shape the West German Ski Association.

From October 1944 onwards, almost all beds in the hut were confiscated to accommodate refugees from the eastern regions. The hut was finally no longer available to the club.

It was not until the early 1950s that club life began to take off. For the first repair work in the ski hut, an expert report estimates 2,300 DM, the average monthly wage during this time was 125 DM. The SKB is therefore seeking state aid from the district government in Arnsberg.

In autumn 1973 there was movement again in the plans of how to continue with the club's own hut. The SKB intends to sell the hut in Winterberg and instead acquire the country school home in Mollseifen. The general assembly authorizes the board of directors to start negotiations with the previous owner - the city of Dortmund. In November 1973 the real estate office of the city of Dortmund granted the SKB the option right to the Landschulheim in Mollseifen. The sale price of the hut achieved at the same time, but at least an amount of DM 220,000, is agreed as the purchase price.

In order to take the climatic changes into account, Winterberg has made enormous investments in the last 10-15 years and provided the ski area with numerous snow-making systems. Thanks to these measures, it is again possible to ski in Winterberg and the surrounding areas from December to March. The members of the SKB also take advantage of this and regularly go to Winterberg from Friday to Sunday, especially to teach the youngest members how to ski. This trend can also be seen in the increasing number of members, so that nothing stands in the way of a continuation of the successful history of the SKB! Against this background, the original idea of founding the SKB, namely to promote skiing and, in particular, to bring young people closer, is still relevant.
